In this journey, we, magic4hope, cooperated with YMCA chengdu together made this event successful. I also meet other volunteers from YMCA and it was an enjoyable collaboration.
Informed by YMCA, I learned that not only there are orphans living in the bad condition, there are non-orphans who also live in bad condition and even worse.
In this trip, we will visit a minority group in China call Yi People (彝族）
They live in the mountain and the children are unable to get formal education. They only have two teachers of middle school degree who serves as what we so-call “sub-teacher”.
The place is very isolated; it took us a day to get here.
People here are without AC but they have their advantage of living. In the city it’s hard to live without AC in the summer. But here I was actually cold at night, and no sweat in daytime–except climbing the mountain.
So my day of magic now starts. In the so-called hotel, which has no room service, no room cleaning, no shower, one light, one power outlet, the bed is only a board, we live in rooms that does not have locks. Restroom are shared, having no toilet, having bugs, and smelling badly. But I was told that this condition is better than that of the villagers.
This is the shared sink we use for washing face, brushing teeth, etc. I think Africa is pretty much like this.
This is my first breakfast here.
In the afternoon, we are organizing a movie for both the children and the old people. I was too tired these days and fell asleep during the movie.
The morning is usually the study time.
The rabbits used for magic performance, I have no idea what they are doing.
I mentioned him earlier; he survived from a murdered and became an orphan, resulting in his strange personality. He often does strange things like this and he never smiles. If you pay attention to his face in other photos, you can see his face is always sad and never had a smile–even when taking photos. Once the photographer force him to smile by stimulating his armpit and caught a photo of him laughing–unnaturally. Seeing that, I then pretend to take out a coin out of his ear, and keeping taking out more coins. He then check his ear and found nothing. I then again take out a coin our of his year, and eventually make him surprise and changed his face to happy–naturally.

We’ve been here several days and the clothes we brought here are running out, so what do we do? Of course we need to wash our own clothes.
But I never learned how to wash my own clothes, so what do I do? –I wash it using magic!
You might still recall:
I don’t usually wash dishes/bowls myself and especially with cold water it would be a hard work. Once he saw me magically produced a long stick and thinks I am a magician so he gave me 0.5Yuan bill and wanted me to make it 100. Well I said I can make it 100 but I can make it disappear, is that OK? Of course I didn’t let him down. I think, grew up in this envirenment he never really saw a magician, so he is very curious. After the magic, I was kinda in a hurry and requested him to wash bowls for me. After that, this became a daily routine: I do a magic to him every day and he wash my dishes for me. So this became a win-win situation. He got to see a lot of cool magics, and I got my dishes washed. Furthermore, I and Liu had a deal that I wash dishes/bowls for her and she washes my clothes for me. So this way it resulted in the awesome consequence that I do a magic and got clothes+dishes all washed. The orphans here joked that I can do magic to wash dishes and wash clothes. Equivalently, it is totally true. This also reflected one of my important philosophy: I don’t need to know how to do everything; I just need to specialize in one and other people will do everything else for me in exchange for my specialization.
Today everyone in the orphanage is helping weeding
We finally got into the park
Today we had activity going outside the orphanage and going into parks to visit. In the afternoon, the orphanage provided the opportunity for the children to pick their favorite books in bookstore. Today is also a milestone-day as the reporting of TV is coming to document this event and we got on TV!
Here we go!
