Concluding child teaching experience

.Some kids are active and some are static. Sometimes it is just impossible for the active kids to do the static things, and vice versa. So it is best to always prepared two kinds of activities and let the children choose on their own, like today. On the other hand, this technique is often used in selling. Would you like to buy the $4 pencill or the $5 pencil, you might want to buy the cheaper one.whichever you choose, the thing that matters is that you bought.

To be continued

Tomorrow will be the first day of instruction starts, and my plane will be the day after tomorrow. So I’ll be missing the first two days of school. Today is the Chinese Valentines day and ironically I’ll be spending today almost all on the bus out of this village back to Chengdu.

On the way back, we have some kids following us all the way to the cliff. At this point, they showed us 3 ways to go. The path going up has a lot of poisoned bugs. The path going down is relatively flat but the we must pass a hell section that is very narrow and the other side is the cliff, in other words, one step wrong means I’m over. After evaluating all 3 choices, we chose the path going down, which also means that we are putting our lives on the line hoping we don’t fall off the cliff.

Now we passed this hell section. We can wave back to the children who followed us all the way to the cliff and say bye-bye. I really wanted to say see you tomorrow but I can’t.
I’ll be leaving tomorrow because my plane is on the 25th as well as the school started ( I’m late for school ), but other volunteers will stay here for 7days. This time it is an enjoyable cooperation with chengdu YMCA volunteers; we look forward to future cooperations.

Ebian Picture_Aug22_magic starts

We pre-made 48 tickets and passes them to every child. To ensure every child can get the magic of their own favorite, every ticket can exchange a magic gimmick so that they can be distributed evenly. Then the children goes to their own favorite station to learn magic. Including me, we have total 6 volunteers and 2 other for assistance, so we have 6 stations each of a different magic. Including sponge heart, linking ring, rubber band, mental magic, silk changing color, and card magics that I’m teaching. I trained the other volunteers last night, so they can take on the other 5 stations. I predicted that–and indeed it is the case–most of the children will rush to me causing uneven distributed items, where items of each kind is limited. I symbolically add a pop-quiz to filter out people leaving only people who is truly interested in card magic.

Question for you, how many sheep are there in the picture?

We pre-made 48 tickets and passes them to every child. To ensure every child can get the magic of their own favorite, every ticket can exchange magic gimmick so that they can be distributed evenly.

In the afternoon, we are going to climb the mountain again to see the children. We took the same path yesterday. Recall yesterday I used my magic and produced a stick to help me go up. It took me 1 hour and I was almost dead when I get up there. Today I was prepared. To get a stronger grip than a stick, I found a mop in the garbage place. With the help of this mop, I got up there in half a hour without any middle break. Not to mention the previous group from Hong Kong took 1 hour and 40 minutes–I feel so proud. Half way up there, we meet some of the kids yesterday collecting corn canes. They were very welcoming us, and they gave us some corn canes. What is corn cane? It is exactly the same as sugar cane but from corn and it’s thinner.

Ebian Picture_Aug22_visiting elders

Today we originally planned to revisited the children in the morning and teach them some magic tricks. I the afternoon, after lunch, we give them a chance to perform. However, it’s now raining in the morning. It’s just impossible to re-climb the mountain in the rain. So we have to change the plan to visited the elders in the morning and visit the children in the afternoon. Actually we already visited the elders last night, but that was a brief visit that I only performed the linking ring. Our visit today is much longer. Not only I performed more magic, but also other volunteers are leading them to dance.I found that the elders here are much more passionate and open compare to the elders in Guangyuan.
